IGCSE Global Perspectives Sample Essay (0457)

Question

Based on Source #4, which argument is more convincing, Grace's or Seth's? Your answer should: β€’ consider both arguments β€’ evaluate their reasoning, evidence and use of language β€’ support your judgement with their words and ideas.

Student Response

For Grace's argument, she claims that utilising technology and industrialised farming can help solve the issue food shortage and hunger across the world. Reasoning: New technologies like self-driving tractors can run all day which does not require man power and by using technology, they can better track the data of the environmental conditions. Evidence: However she didn't suuport her reasoning with related statistics. She considered the perspective of a farmer which is relevant to the food production that she focused on. The evidence she stated are mostly experiences of her father who is a farmer. Use of language: The words like "he says" "I think that people are hungry because trade is unfair" shows that these are mainly her opinions instead of a fact. This means that the information she provided can be biased or affected by her vested interest. For Seth's argument, he claims that Industrial farming might not be the solution to hunger and that people should consider a cleaner and more environmentally friendly approach to the issue. Reasoning: He states that relying on industrial farming can destroy the habitat like the lose of species and quality of soil and that would cause climate change, ultimately making production of food more difficult. He suggests that farming should be organic and local, be given back to local people who grew the crops. Evidence: He made good use of evidence like magazine "New Internationalist", not just stating his own opinions. That provides a more well rounded argument. Overall, I think Seth's argument is more convincing as the evidence he provided are not just from one perspective and that it also contributes to the environment.

Testimonials

"I used Ecoe (AI Testing and Marking tool) for my Y8 MYP Science Unit test. One of the standout benefits is how engaged the students were with the platform. They appreciated receiving their feedback within 30 minutes, and the detailed explanations for incorrect answers helped them understand their mistakes and improve. As a teacher, I also found the platform incredibly efficient. Marking a set of 30 students' work, which would normally take around 2--2.5 hours, was completed in just 20 minutes. However, the real value came from how quickly students received meaningful, actionable feedback, which supported their learning and kept them motivated. Overall, Ecoe made the entire process smoother and more impactful for both students and teachers."
